News: Sony Confirms PS4 to PS5 Save Transfers, Reveals Incompatible PS4 Games

Recommended Posts

Update: In a new PlayStation blog post, Sony has elaborated on the upcoming PS4/PS5 compatibility features. As revealed in the Support Page, save data can be transferred from PS4 to PS5, but it will be a developer decision. Cloud saves are also available for PS Plus members, and PS5 customers will find that their digital library will transfer once accounts are synched. Streaming PS4 games to PS5 or PS Now will also be available, but will not benefit from a performance boost some PS4 titles will get when played natively on the PS5. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Original Story: Sony has confirmed that saved data can be transferred from PS4 to PS5, as well as listed ten games that will not be compatible with the PlayStation 5. In a new PlayStation support page, Sony states that “You can transfer digital games and saved data from a PS4 console to a PS5 console using WiFi data transfer.” There is no information as to if PS4 cloud saves can be downloaded onto a PS5 console. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/09/biggest-ps5-teardown-takeaways-next-gen-console-watch"] In addition, the backwards compatibility instructions reveal that playing digitally-purchased PS4 games will just be a case of downloading them from your game library to PS5, while discs can simply be inserted (although an update may be required). The instructions note discs and game library are accessed from the ‘game hub’ of the PS5 UI, which hopefully Sony will show off in the coming weeks. As for what games are backwards compatible, Sony once again states that “the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles”. This time, though, the company has published a list of 10 “PS4 only” games, suggesting only fewer than a dozen games will not be backwards compatible. Those games are:
  • DWVR
  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man - Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Shadow Complex Remastered
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe's Diner
As for games that are backwards compatible, “select” PS4 games will benefit from Game Boost, which “may make PS4 games run with a higher or smoother frame rate”. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-game-and-announcement-featured-in-the-playstation-5-showcase-event&captions=true"] The page also notes that some functionality may not be present when playing PS4 games on PS5, such as the Share menu (it is replaced by the Create menu), In-Game Live from PlayStation, and the PS4 tournaments feature. Additionally, some games “may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior”. It also notes that PS4 DualShock 4 controllers can be used with the PS5 to play PS4 games.
