Team Building Information

Team Builds and Tiers

The number of Golds, Silvers, Bronzes is determined on a team-by-team basis. Some teams have more talent than others. If you do not want a bad team, do not pick them. There should be plenty of teams with a good deal of talent. Most teams have 5 gold, 6 silver, 9 bronze.

Summary of Banned and Restricted Abilities

-The following abilities are banned for all tiers: Helmet High Tackles, Quick Release, Route God, Workhorse, Bullet Time, Branching Tackles, Signal Stealer, Cadence

-The following ability restrictions are in effect:

-You may only have 3 players with Leadership on the team. Max 2 per side of the ball.

-You may only have 3 players with Clutch on the team. Max 2 per side of the ball.

-You may only have 1 player with Mr 3rd Down on the team.

-Bronze players may not have Closing Speed or Breakaway Burst

Gold

-4 abilities

-Gold players must be created with the abilities listed. Some Golds have ability slots available, others do not.

-Some Golds have ability restrictions which are self explanatory

-There are no Gold FBs, K, or Ps

-Banned Abilities: Helmet High Tackles, Quick Release, Route God, Workhorse, Bullet Time, Branching Tackles, Signal Stealer, Cadence

-Restricted Abilities: Leadership (3 per team, 2 per side of the ball – any tier), Clutch (3 per team, 2 per side of the ball – any tier), Mr. 3rd Down (1 per team unless otherwise prescribed – any tier)

Silver

-3 abilities

-Silver players must be created with the abilities listed. Some Silvers have ability slots available, others do not.

-Some Silvers have ability restrictions which are self explanatory

-Banned Abilities: Helmet High Tackles, Quick Release, Route God, Workhorse, Bullet Time, Branching Tackles, Signal Stealer, Cadence

-Restricted Abilities: Leadership (3 per team, 2 per side of the ball – any tier), Clutch (3 per team, 2 per side of the ball – any tier), Mr. 3rd Down (1 per team unless otherwise prescribed – any tier)

Bronze

-2 abilities.

-You must have a legend QB on your roster, and he must have the ability or abilities listed for him; if he has an open slot, you may give him whatever ability you want so long as it is not restricted for either his tier or explicitly restricted for him individually.

.Otherwise you can choose whatever players you want as Bronzes.

-Banned Abilities: Helmet High Tackles, Quick Release, Route God, Workhorse, Bullet Time, Branching Tackles, Signal Stealer, Cadence, Closing Speed, Breakaway Burst

-Restricted Abilities: Leadership (3 per team, 2 per side of the ball – any tier), Clutch (3 per team, 2 per side of the ball – any tier), Mr. 3rd Down (1 per team unless otherwise prescribed – any tier)

Substitutions

-Positions are listed for each player and are very specific. Players must be subbed at their proper positions, which means they must play on the proper side of the field. If the default setup is otherwise, you must change your subs to reflect reality. WRs and CBs have purposefully not been given sides of the field and can play anywhere. Also some OLBs who frequently play on both sides of the line are simply listed as OLB. You can sub these on either side.

-ILBs/MLBs must be created as ILBs, not OLBs who are subbed.

Numerical Editing

-Only directed numerical editing is allowed. The following situations apply:

-QB Speed and Agility – These have all been researched based on combine 40 times with some game film factored in and slight adjustments made for the sake of realism. If a QB has Speed Burner and/or Quick Feet, it is already factored into their SPD/AGI number. Manually change their Speed and Agility last after they have been edited in-game and then do not edit them in-game afterward or you will return their Speed and Agility to the default number.

-If any Bronze or Silver player has Speed Burner, you may add the +5 speed manually. Do this last after you have made your final in-game edits.

-This is the only numerical editing allowed.

Offensive formations

-Restricted formations may not be used. If you feel that you must have certain formations, be sure to pick a team that allows them. These restrictions are very light for most teams.

Defensive formations

-Only the specified defensive formations are allowed. This is for realism and also because certain players' positions are dependent on the scheme. If you are only able to work with a particular defensive scheme, be sure to pick a team that runs that scheme.

-5-2 and Goalline can only be used against Jokers, Jacks, Load, inside the 10 yard line, or in any X and 0-3 yds situation

How to make a 20 CAP team

Here is how I make 20 CAP teams (4-6-10). Read through it so that you understand what I did at each step and why so that you can adjust it to the specific number of CAPs at each tier assigned to your team.

1.) [on the XBox 360] Make a normal team with 2 golds, 3 silvers, 6 bronzes.

2.) [in the editor] Make 3 silvers on my team gold, make all 6 bronzes on my team gold (this frees up 9 spots), then make the 2 golds not yet on my team bronze

3.) [on the XBox 360] Edit my team. I should have 9 open slots, all silver and bronze slots. Add 3 silvers, 4 remaining bronzes and the 2 golds you made bronze

4.) [in the editor] Change everyone's tier back to what it should be

-3 silvers you made gold back to silver

-2 golds you made bronze back to gold

-6 bronzes you made gold to generics (-)

-4 bronzes you just added to generics (-)

-1 of the 10 generics you just made above back to bronze

Tip: It helps to make your CAPs in order of tier. Make 4 golds, 6 silvers, 10 bronzes in that order so that when you are doing step 4, you can look at the Edit Players screen on your XBox 360 and see very quickly who should be what tier and what tier they actually are.

First off, Thanks for taking the time to do this, It's greatly appreciated.

Now for the nitpicking

You talk about the golds and say that all other golds outside the skill positions get 5 abilities (QB/P/K/OL) then you say there are no gold P or K allowed. This is a contradiction. Which one is it?

Numerical editing. This question is biased as I'm a niners fan. Willis is one of, If not the fastest linebacker in the nfl. Even has a gold with speed burner and closing speed IMO doesn't make up for the lack of speed the gold ilb starts out with (I think it's 80) my argument is for his speed to get a numerical boost.

For the Bengals you gave Manny Lawson pass rush ability. Manny is not that great at rushing the passer. If he was the niners would have re-signed him and not drafted a pass rusher to take his place. More often than not he was taken off the field in obvious passing situations because of his lack of pass rush ability. Coverage bonus is more like it or speed burner, closing speed, or run coverage. Those are the things he excels at.

If closing speed is limited, BAB needs to be under the same restrictions.

Closing speed is the natural counter to BAB.

As for the tier distribution themselves would love to see what criteria you used to break them down.

As for the Raiders if you are basing it on play last year then Tommy Kelly (2nd most sacks amongst DT in the league - only behind Suh) and Micheal Huff deserve to be gold (2nd team All*Pro). DE Matt Shaughnessy deserves to be a silver as well.

For the Raiders, I would probably drop Campbell down to bronze and McClain as well who was solid but unspectacular.

Others:

Not sure how Eddie Royal is a silver. Dude only has 600 yards and 3 TDs. There are others but it is what it is.

OK I will look at the comments and adjust accordingly. Believe it or not I appreciate the feedback. I feel that I am fair and knowledgeable, but there is no way I will know as much about every team as you guys who are fans and follow them intensely.

With the NFL's new rule of Kickoffs taking place at the 35 again, I think we need to numerically edit all the kickers on the teams and give them a +5 in power rating since we can't adjust kickoffs. There will be a lot of touchbacks in the NFL this season and I think our league's need to show that.

Also the 5-2 and goalline only being used against those formations you listed is not a good base. If someone is inside the 2 yard line I like to come out in goalline if they come out in any formation that looks like it could be a possible run. You should be able to use Goalline in any short yardage situation.

Tpat, just looking over the Patriots I have some things that I personally believe ought to be changed:

-I think that Pat Chung needs to be a silver over Meriweather. He was by far the more consistent safety.

-Vollmer should be a silver as well, as he was their best offensive-linemen until the return of Mankins. I would also argue that Light should replace Solder as a silver. Light was re-signed and appears to be the starter until Solder is capable of replacing him and has added some weight.

-Jerod Mayo needs to have 'Wrap Up Tackler', as he had the most tackles in the NFL last year.

-Logan Mankins must have 'Bulldozer', and shouldn't have 'Brickwall'. He a notoriously strong run-blocker, however he was exposed in the 2007 Super Bowl by the Giants in terms of pass-protection.

-Brady should have 'Pocket Presence' and 'Laser Arm'. He's incredibly accurate, especially in the short passing game, and he has a knack for the sliding around in the pocket and avoiding oncoming defenders.

Those are the main things that I notice. I really appreciate the effort that was put into this, but I just wanted to point out what I noticed and felt could be represented more accurately. Let me know what you think as I know you're a Patriots fan as well.

Here's some ratings I see differently

Broncos

Orton should be a Silver and Champ should be upgraded to a Gold

Dolphins

Reggie Bush should be downgraded to a silver

NY Jets

Sanchez should be a bronze, He's the weakest part of their offense

Pittsburgh

Mendenhall and Pouncy can both make strong cases for being gold, But this goes back to Bush, how can Mendenhall be a Silver and Bush be a gold. Pittsburgh is one of the best teams in the league and if we are going to make teams better then other teams, maybe they deserve more gold stars.

Overall I like the tiers, I think you are being way to generous with the QB's. What we should do is rank the QB's and and cutoffs. I don't think Hasslebeck, Campbell and Sanchez deserve SIlver ratings, I think they all deserve bronze.

i'm very thankful for you making this effort. i think you did a tremendous job, and i'm delighted to see this. i have some things i noticed, and i'll post them below. just wanna help.

dolphins -

reggie bush shouldn't be a gold. he hasn't shown anything resembling gold level production in the nfl.

ravens -

the ravens should have the ability to play 4-3, as they switch into a lot of exotic packages.

haloti ngata is a defensive tackle, but should be able to be subbed as a defensive end in the 3-4. he mixes it up, depending on what they want to accomplish.

ray rice could make a claim to gold. he is the main piece of the offensive, and has played very well.

steelers -

casey hampton has a claim to be a gold, as he is touted as the best 3-4 defensive tackle in the league.

houston texans -

arian foster should have strength bonus. also makes a case for power, quick feet and cutback bonus since they run a zone blocking scheme that is dependent on mauling on the line and having him choosing the right hole. also has soft hands.

indianapolis colts -

they sometimes use two-back sets near the goalline, though usually the blocking back is an extra lineman. you may remember this because they sometimes play-action fake and throw to him.

reggie wayne has a great case for route god since he runs the best routes in the league, but he can definitely be given quick feet and/or cutback ability to at least help his footwork.

dallas clark should be gold over jeff saturday, or in addition to him.

both freeney and mathis should have ball strip, since they make a living doing it.

addai needs quick feet and/or cutback ability.

brackett needs to have a ton of tackling abilities.

bethea is a foosteps guy.

denver broncos -

eddie royal can not be a silver. he hasn't done anything of note, literally, since his first season.

for champ bailey, i just read a scouting report about him that literally used the term closing speed.

kansas city chiefs -

jamaal charles should have breakaway burst, he's the fastest running back not named chris johnson, and it's not that far off.

san diego chargers -

vincent jackson should probably have acrobatic catches and deep threat. could also give him hops.

gates definitely has hops.

Huff is no Gold. Huff isn't even a Silver. By week five Huff was splitting time with Hirem due to his weak tackling and over run coverage. He's a one trick pony, I'm kinda mad we gave him such a huge contract. Having said that Lechler should be a silver if SeaBass is. And SeaBass isn't clutch at all, he's missed his fair share of game winners. Everything else looks good.

I think instead of starting it out by breaking it down by team. We start out by breaking it down by position. That way we are not all over the board with the different rankings. After having all the positions broken down, then we throw them on teams and let them end up where they end up. This will also help for assigning attributes I think.

OK here are some responses:

Raiders - I fixed the D-line, I will take your word for it on Michael Huff, but I cannot see him as a gold. Silver is the max I can see for him.

49ers - Manny Lawson - I took Pass Rush Bonus off of him, I am going to stay firm on the ILBs though. You can give them Speed Burner which will take them to 85 and Closing Speed which will make him plenty fast in my opinion. As I have mentioned to others in the league, defensive players already have a slight edge in the middle of the field because it is either slightly smaller than real life or they move faster than a real human could even at limited speeds. I have seen manually controlled LBs go way further in a short amount of time than a real person could, except Usein Bolt (I literally calculated their speed based on distance).

Kickoffs and 5-2 - I adjusted the 5-2/GL rule to include any obvious short yardage situations. I also cleaned up some of the other rules based on feedback. What I want to avoid is people just using the 5-2 all the time, which is a defense no one in the NFL actually uses. For Kickoffs, this is one area I would not like to go in the direction the NFL has. The rule is horrible in my opinion and I would like to keep kick returns as a part of our game.

Patriots - I am a fan as you know and I watch all of their games including all of their preseason games. Here are my takes. On Pat Chung, I can see him as borderline Silver, but statistically he does not compare to Meriweather, and Meriweather also has 2 Pro Bowls to Pat Chung's 0. I know Pro Bowls are not everything, but still. I don't see him being significantly better on film than Meriweather either. I can relent on Mankins, but honestly the reason the Giants got so much pressure in the Super Bowl is because they had the best D-line since the 1970s Vikings. Michael Strahan, statistically one of the best DEs ever, Osi Umenyiora, who got 6 sacks in one game, second all time in that category, and who I believe tied Dick butkus' record last season for most fumbles forced in a season with 10, and Justin Tuck, who is one of the best D-linemen in the game right now. O-lines always rotate protection because monster pass rushers are unblockable in single coverage. I think that game was more a matter of a monster D-line playing the game of their lives than the Pats O-line being bad. I can make Matt Light an alternate, but Solder has been playing with the ones in preseason games.

No way is Huff a bronze. In the past he was terrible, but last year he stepped it up big time. He was one of 10 players who had at least 2 sacks, 2 INT, and 2 forced fumbles last year. He was named 2nd team All*Pro. He'll never be a stout run defender (how many FS are?) but he has enough cover skills to play nickel CB and last year developed into an elite play maker.

Regarding Meriweather and Chung. Meriweather saw snaps reduced last season due to a poor performance in training camp, and the same has been occurring this year. Chung notched 3 INTs last season, as did Meriweather, however Chung had 28 more tackles. Talk to most Patriots fans and they'll take Chung over Meriweather any day of the week.

Regarding Light and Solder. Solder has been taking first team reps due to the Light's injury. With that said, it's every expectation that Light will return to the starting lineup as soon as he can, unless Solder really outplays him. Either way, Vollmer needs to be a silver. He was arguably the Patriots best offensive-linemen last season until Mankins returned.

I'll take a harder look later, but right off the bat I take issue with Reggie Bush. You can argue he isn't even Silver.

At best he'll split carries with a rookie RB, but more likely he'll be the 3rd down back... again.

I agree with Freak's assessment of your QB's. I think you're being a bit too generous.

I also wonder why you can' have Gold K/P? In actuality I don't think there's a difference between Gold and Silver statistically anyways... maybe that's why?

Overall I love what your doing.

Later (Tomorrow) I'll post the following teams for you:

Buccaneers, Eagles, Cowboys, Redskins

Along with secondary input on the following:

Steelers, Texans

Instead of using Madden Rankings or ESPN scouting reports (which are outdated)...

How about we use pro-football-reference's "approximate value" statistic which puts a ranking to every player's season value. PFR is the premier football statistic website and you can trust that the approximate value is statistically sound and as objective as we can get.

You can use the play index to sort by position and by team. Higher approximate value (AV) = better season.

Just for everyone to get a taste here are the Top 20 players last season according to PFR's AV:

Here's some ratings I see differently

I stand by Orton. 3600+ yards and 20+ TDs his last season, both times with QB ratings 86+.

Bush has been dowgraded to silver.

Mendenhall I am going to keep at Silver, because I don't want the team to have 6 golds, and because his ypc is not really that good, he just gets a LOT of carries.

Sanchez and Campbell have been demoted, but I stand by Hasselbeck. When he is healthy he is very good but can be inconsistent. But he averages 3,000 yards a season.

Casey Hampton is good, but again I want to cap at 5 golds, and I feel this is fair to the Steelers, and also he does not make the impact in real life that a gold DT will have in this game.

i'm very thankful for you making this effort. i think you did a tremendous job, and i'm delighted to see this. i have some things i noticed, and i'll post them below. just wanna help.

Ray Rice has been upgraded.

Arian Foster has been adjusted as suggested.

Colts have been adjusted as suggested. I want to keep Route god out.

Eddie Royal has been demoted, but I am keeping Champ as a Silver. they even discussed moving him to FS because he is slowing down.

Chargers and Jamaal Charles have been adjusted as suggested.

I am going to demote Huff and repromote McClain, because this was my initial assessment anyway.

Ben Roethlisberger

Josh Freeman

Joe Flacco

Matt Cassel

Matt Schaub

Peyton Manning

You have 4 of those as silvers! At the very least there is no way Ben Roethlisberger is a silver. He is without any doubt one of their 5 best players.
